The Only Person Holding YOU back…is you: 3 ways you get in your own way.
It sounds really harsh and shocking, and I want it to be that way. You are the person who is holding you back. There might be others contributing to the problem, but when it comes right down to it, you’re the one who lets them.
- You replace your instincts with someone else’s advice, and/or worry about what other people think. Bad, Bad, Bad idea! This is a case where fear is good…in the form of your intuition telling you not to listen. If you are constantly looking for outward advice/approval then you have lost your authentic voice! You are holding yourself back by not having confidence in yourself. This is simple enough to remedy. Start with baby steps. Say no (when you really want to). Listen to your body (it reacts physically when something feels off) and get back to the basics (look back at your life and count your blessing and all the things you have already accomplished!)
This is your life, you know how to run it! You don’t need someone else’s permission. - You are too attached to your “but” and have too many excuses.
One of my favorite saying is, “Get off your but!” That is, look at the excuses you’re using to hold yourself back. Easy to identify by the standard…”I’d love to do __________, BUT___________.” There is a well known theory out there: if you are hungry enough for something you’ll do what it takes to get it (no matter what the cost). I’m not saying that you should go about things in an unethical, illegal or immoral way, but check your “but” next time. Then ask yourself, is this but a true CAN’T or a WON’T. There is a huge difference. Won’t is very empowering. I means that this is something that you won’t do for whatever reason, and stating it makes you realize how often the can’t is actually a won’t. Give yourself permission to say, “I WON’T exercise tonight because CSI is on,” and you’ll be so much closer to living your truth! - You are focusing on the wrong things. Have you taken time to figure your goals “from the inside out?”
That is where true happiness lies! I wrote a blog on it recently. Think about this scenario (it makes your priorities very clear): if there were a fire or flood and I had 5 minutes to get out (or die) what would I make sure went with me? Most people say they’d grab their kids, pets, photo’s, maybe the odd heirloom. You aren’t going to be worrying about the Volvo or your designer purse. Looking at the inside-out perspective you can see that your family takes precedence over “things”…but are you living that way? You can say, “But I want money FOR my family. So they can have everything they want: nice clothes, iPods, travel.” But I bet, they’d rather see more of YOU then any of those things! Are you holding yourself back from happiness and wealth because your definition of happiness and wealth doesn’t actually ring true to you?
Think about those 3 ways. What is your true definition of success? What kind of excuses are you using, and how are they preventing you from living your authentic life? How are you letting someone else run the show called Your Life? Answer those questions and you will be light years ahead of the average person, who is content complaining about how things are, without actually doing anything to change them! Redefining Success
What does success mean to you?
I know that most people have a canned response. “Success means having lots of money, wearing expensive clothes, travelling around the world and driving a fancy car.” Notice that all of those things are external? They are all things that you “get” outside of yourself, and most of those things don’t make you happy for long.
Crazy idea…If your house were to burn down, what would you take? You’d take the photo’s, the babybooks, family pet…you wouldn’t head to the closet to get your favorite pair of shoes or that designer dress.
WHAT IF you defined success from the inside out?
So start this process with a quick exercise. What does success really mean to you? What do you want to do with your life? Write it down, not editing or worrying about others might think. Then look at the difference between what you say you want, and what you currently have. Create a “backward” map. That is, start where you want to be and map out a backward trail until you end up where you are now. Since you are where you are now, start there and take the next logical step to living a successful life.

Here is the last of the 4 part Installments I promised. Review parts 1, 2, & 3 and see how often you’re allowing your “but” to get in your own way.
4. Resentment.
“I should…”
Very similar to guilt, and resentment ties right back into fear again. You’re afraid if you don’t do something you will receive a negative consequence. So you are continually living your life according to someone else’s rules.
“Nice girls are agreeable.”
“I should say yes, even when I don’t want to.”
“My sister’s kids have tutors.”
Which means you are on a lot of committee and volunteering for causes that you don’t truly care about, simply because you don’t want to say no. Or, you spend a lot of money trying to keep up appearances and do/say/wear the right things.
It’s exhausting and unnecessary. When you identify and clean out this toxic thinking habits, you are happier and have more room for the health and wellness you are actually looking for.
These habits are incredibly common so don’t beat yourself up for feeling this way. Instead, work on being aware that they exist. Notice them when they creep in, and how they are working against you.
Over time, awareness will make all of them disappear, but this will take practice like any other new skill. How to Guarantee a GREAT Day, Every Day

Every Monday morning I have a standing radio interview I enjoy very much. But you can imagine that it can become routine. To prevent this, the host doesn’t tell me the topic before we go live on the air—now that puts some excitement into it!
This week, he asked me: How can a person guarantee that they will have a great day, every day? Some may find that hard to answer, but for me it was easy. You see, I believe we can control our destinies and create for ourselves the kind of lives we desire. People who live based on these principles achieve what they desire, while people who live reacting to circumstances do not.
Here are the principles for having a GREAT day every day:
Focus on today only.
Yes, long-range goals are important. But our focus must be on today. My equation is that your short-term tasks, multiplied by time, equal your long-term accomplishments. With that in mind, it’s imperative that we focus on short-term because, when multiplied by time, it will eventually equal our long-term goals. Don’t worry about tomorrow. Make today the best day you have ever had. Realize that when you lay down to sleep tonight you will have just given up the only shot you will ever have at today. You only get one shot at your today, so focus intently on making it all that it possibly can be. Focus, focus, focus! When you focus on making today great, you are helping guarantee that you will make your day GREAT, every day!
Embrace your power to choose.
Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “The history of free men is never written by chance but by choice—their choice.” When your today becomes your yesterday, you will look back and realize that day was a result of your choices. “But wait Chris, what if my boss controlled my day? That isn’t my choice!” you might say. But it is your choice to work for someone else. You chose to let someone else tell you what to do. But you can control your own destiny. The moment we realize that we can exercise a powerful gift from God, namely the gift of free will and choice, is when we begin to create for ourselves a GREAT day each and every day! Take ownership of the direction of your life. Make your choices and carry them out!
Your attitude is up to you.
Yes, bad things may happen in your day. The pitcher for “Team Circumstances” may have a tremendous curveball waiting for you, and you cannot control that. You cannot control what others may do or say. But you can control your attitude. Your attitude about whatever happens to you is up to you.
When something happens to you, you have the choice: Will you let it get you down and depressed, keeping you from forging ahead and making the day the best one ever? Or will you say to yourself that, no matter what happens, you are on the path to success and no obstacle will keep you from it? Will you say, “Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose—I guess this time I lost”? Will you say, “Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn—I can really learn something from this!”?
It is all in what attitude you choose. Your attitude is up to you, and when you choose to have a great attitude, you are choosing to guarantee to have a GREAT day, every day!
Live out and act on your priorities.
So far, we have dealt with internal perspectives, and that is indeed the place to start. But the practical place is in our priorities. If we want to make our days great, then we have to live out those things that will by definition make our days great. And those things are what are important to us. They are our priorities.
So each morning, start out by asking, “What things are important to me today? What are the things I need to accomplish in order for me to lay down tonight and know that I lived a GREAT day?” Then put those in order of most important to least important.
Don’t do what is fun. Don’t do what is easy. Do what is IMPORTANT! Live out your priorities. When you do, you will guarantee that you will make your day GREAT, every day!
Tomorrow, when you wake up, go through the four following points and see if you don’t make tomorrow a GREAT day:
* Focus on today only.
* Understand that I get to choose how today will go.
* Remain in a positive attitude no matter what happens.
* Live out and act on my priorities.
Do this, and you will guarantee a GREAT day, every day.

HOW I dump the junk…and be happy
I have been talking A LOT about the importance “dumping the Junk” lately. Some of it has to do with the end of the Master LIFE Cleanse program, I always feel refreshed after teaching that course.
Part of it has to do with the need I see out there…people’s lives are still filled with JUNK! So I feel a personal responsibility to share my experiences with others. (Enter the Dump The Junk eBook, which is FREE, so you have no reason NOT to grab a copy, devour it and live it.)
In my Authentic Self Book Club meeting on Wednesday, one of the participants asked me how I was able to not let negative circumstances get to me. The short version of my answer is this:
I just don’t experience the negative in the same way that I used to. I’ve dumped the Junk, and become less magnetic to negative stuff (aka: Junk — sarcastic, angry people; guilt; anger; self doubt; debt). I just don’t physically or emotionally attract the stuff anymore.
Not that my life is perfect. Far from it! But I am living and experiencing a different life than I was 3 years ago. And it all stems from the effort I’ve been putting in to change how I am feeling and what I’m attracting. It takes effort, but done right, it feels effortless.
I’m not going to share how I Dumped MY Junk in this post, you can grab the free book for that, but I am going to share with you 3 of my favorite “happiness vibes” exercises.
These are the systems that I use to pull myself out of a funk when I notice I’m falling into one. And with time, I’ve managed to go from “flabby thinking” and letting my thoughts control my emotions with out my awareness, to being fit and fabulous! (Vibrationally, at least). These are the ways I did it.
Focus Wheel. This is an Abraham-Hicks Process and I’ve talked about it before. It’s just a wheel, with what I want in the center. I get “on” the wheel but stating a true, yet positive statement that feels good. After I get the first one (it’s the most difficult) the LoA takes care of the rest, flooding my system with more positive and true thoughts. By the time I’ve filled out the entire wheel, I am very close to feeling like I’ve already accomplished my goal in the center. And that puts me “into the vortex” to attract what I want, quicker and without a lot of effort.
The Wheel on the right is a quick example I created. It should give you the basic idea to help you get started with your own. NOTE: Do not put anything on the wheel that doesn’t make you feel good! Only positive thoughts are allowed.- Gratitudes (specific). After I’ve completed the Focus Wheel, I spend time coming up with 10 things that I am grateful for, specific to whatever I placed in the center of my wheel. (Example, if my Focus Wheel is all about feeling good and looking fit, I’d do 10 Gratitudes on how I already feel like a “thin” person).
- Rampage of Appreciation. After the the Gratitudes I do another Abe-Hicks Process. I sit and I just appreciate everything around me. This is like a broad Gratitude list. I appreciate the sun shining and my healthy, fat cat. I love the sweater I’m wearing, it feels so good, and the computer I’m writing at. I love the people I’ve come across and the paint on my walls. Love everything, but be honest. You’ll create a lot of dissonance (resistance) if you try to fake this.
Those are my Secret Weapons to happiness. And I do them daily. Get into a habit of setting aside 20 minutes each day to do the same and see how it becomes a habit to feel good…and see how you become less attractive to the Junk in life!

It’s about the living of life!
As always, I asked…and was given.
I’ve been nervous about my upcoming 10k race that I’m running in 36 hours. May flew by in a flurry of live programs, book promotions, writing my own book and publishing an ebook. My birthday was somewhere in there too, and now I’m looking at running 6.24 miles in just over a day and thinking, “CRAP! I wish I’d made it a priority to train more.”
But there is no use spending a lot of time worrying or feeling guilty or beating myself up. That will do nothing but waste more valuable time and energy and vital life experience!
So I’ve been thinking, the last day or so, about how to change my attitude from dread to being happy just running/walking the 10k, rather than letting the competitive drive in me take over and punish myself for not working harder.
I got it. Just a few minutes ago. I was walking my dog in the rain, listening to some Abe-Hicks material (Tahiti ‘09) and Esther, channeling Abraham said
It’s like if you were running a marathon. (!!!! My ears completely perked up.) You don’t run the marathon for the reward at the end. (Really? That’s right!) You do it for the energy it gives you, and the feeling of completion, and the blood that flows through your body. You do it for the fun and the life experience.
And then she said something that really spoke to me
You didn’t come here to gather stuff, you can to align with life. This is about life. This is not about the doing of stuff, or the having of stuff.
BINGO! That was exactly what I needed to hear, and of course, I had to share it with you guys.
So there you have it. You’re not alive so that you can gather a bunch of toys, travel to exotic places and die. You are here, alive, to live your life! And that might mean that you gather lots of toys and travel to great places, but the important thing is that you’re alive and enjoying every minute of it.
For me, that translates into getting up at 5am, to run/walk 10 km along the beautiful river, likely in the rain, with my husband right beside me. If my time is in the 70-75 minute range, considering the training I did (or the lack of!), that’s fantastic. Otherwise, I’m just going along for the weather, the view and the company! Oh, and the really nice Adidas t-shirt that I get for registering
So, now I’m going to lace up my runners and grab my mp3 player…my treadmill is calling my name!
