Being the perfect-sized you
I know that weight and dress size is a contention for a lot of women, and that we’re not supposed to focus on the numbers. But that scale (and the dressing room mirror) doesn’t lie…or does it?
Keep in mind that you have a pre-conceived notion about what you look like. You look in the mirror and probably don’t see the same thing that other people see when they look at you. 
Because of that very thing, you need to lose the weight in your HEAD before it comes off your body. I know because I gained a lot of weight after I got married (25 lbs on my relatively small frame), and lost 35lbs 6 months later…and even though I was smaller, it wasn’t enough. Being in the 130’s should have been perfect. It was my goal…but I was still of “fatty mindset” because it wasn’t good enough. That “fatty mindset” took me back up 10 lbs, still in a normal healthy range and the weight I’m currently at, I am more comfortable here because this is where I remain and I am happy with it.
Which takes us back to my main point, you can by “skinny” according to someone else’s standards and “fat” according to your own. It’s all about perspective and perspective is something you have COMPLETE control over. Weight goes up and down normally (to a certain extent–I believe approximately 5 lbs) but your thoughts on what you look like don’t change as easily. Ask anyone who has dramatically changed their appearance or lost a lot of weight (more than 50 lbs), the mindset is harder to get over than the weight.

I subscribe to Success magazine. It’s a fantastic resource, full of inspiration articles and stories.
I was reading about Gillian Michaels (the trainer for the Red Team on the Biggest Loser) and she has a lot of things to say about success, health, wealth and being authentic. Something really struck me, though, and I really had to share some of her insights.
Gillian’s Formula for Success (according to me)
“I opened myself up to the opportunities that came my way, and I pursued them with passion and intensity. And when you do that and you stay open, then you allow those opportunities to manifest in ways that they are meant to.”
Oh my goodness! A women aligned with my own self. What a great way to describe how the Law of Attraction works. She also said this:
“Do you see failure as a validation that you’re worthless, or do you see failure as an entry point for learning so you grow stronger and wiser and better? And do you see failure as an integral part of success? Taking ownership of the state of your life, you’re empowering yourself to change it in any way you choose.”
Again, thank you, Gillian…I couldn’t agree more!
It’s Your Right to Be Wrong
Catchy title, isn’t it? I can’t claim it as mine. I was actually sent a “reminder” on Facebook for an event that I didn’t want to go to. But that is a whole other blog on social media etiquette…
Regardless, I loved this subject line. And it got my mind rolling.
What are some other rights that we have as humans, that we so often forget to claim or apologize for? Here is what I came up with:
- Reserve the right to make mistakes. Yes. You are not perfect. I am not perfect and anyone pretending to be perfect isn’t fooling anyone! In my business research I continually see the fact that it’s those who fail continually, who actually succeed. Crazy, I know. But this is the reason why, instead of giving up after one failure, they go on UNTIL they succeed. Keep trying a new avenue and it will eventually work out for you.
- Reserve the right to change your mind. It’s hard for us to do this, especially as women who are used to being nice and accommodating, never to trouble anyone. I say screw that! I know it sounds harsh, but I reserve the right to change my mind at any time especially if something isn’t working for me. Which leads me to…
- Reserve the right to be self-ish. If you don’t focus on making you happy, no one is going to do it for you. AND if you place your happiness in another person’s care, they can easily take it from you, on purpose or not. That doesn’t sound very empowering, does it? Focus on self care, and then spread the love to others. It will be so much easier when you do it this way, even though it’s counter-intuitive at first.
- Reserve the right to say NO. Look back at number 3. This is your life and you only get once chance to live it. Looking back there are very few things that I regret saying no, too. You’re more likely to regret saying yes to something you are just on the fence about, than to say no. Re-prioritize and set boundaries or change your perspective so that saying YES, feels good!
- Reserve the right to say YES! You know when you want to say yes, but something holds you back? You really want to take a ball room dancing class, or ask that cute guy out for coffee but something is holding you back…it’s call fear. Specifically it’s an underlying commitment that at one time worked to keep you safe, now it works to keep you stunted. If there is ANY disconnect between the life you have and the life you want, check your actions and say YES to more of the things that align you with what you want.
- Reserve the right to be vulnerable. You don’t always have to be in control and serene. Sometimes getting emotional and opening up leads to true break-throughs and clarity. AND sometimes it helps people to see you as human. I was once told that I was intimidating, which I found intriguing because I’m introverted, but I have always tried to be approachable. It wasn’t until I started to relax and let my real self show through that people started to really respond to me, but I first had to get it out of my head that I always had to calm and cool to be professional. Warmth does not equal weakness (and excitement or enthusiasm doesn’t mean you’re unsophisticated or “uncool.”)
- Reserve the right to change. That is change, period. Unless you are living underground and in the dark, you are changing every single day. Hopefully you’re changing and expanding with new ideas, new theories, new experiences. It’s as simple as noticing something small and appreciating it (like a beautiful sunrise) that can bring huge change into your life by changing perspective. Reserve the right to grow as a person and (see #2) change your mind.
- Reserve the right the be wrong. See #1!
Reserve the right to give yourself permission to be a human being, full of imperfections and faults.

4 Tips for a Slim Holiday Season
I know that Christmas is fast approaching. This is a struggle for many people who
imagine a thinner silhouette. I have a few tips up my sleeve to help you get through
the next couple of weeks with out destroying your fun!
#1 DON’T CUT OUT THE COMFORT FOOD.
Often the first things to go when “on a diet” is the comfort food.
With Eat, Shrink & Be Happy, you’re not on a diet. BUT you may be tempted to cut out all chocolate, sugar, potatoes and bread. DON’T DO IT!
In my own experience, the moment I tell myself, “Kim, you know you said you wouldn’t eat that,” that is ALL I can think about. It occupies my entire mind space. Then what happens? … I end up sitting down and eating an entire bag of crackers and brie!
Don’t fall into that trap! There is nothing that will test your will power and your
sanity more, than cutting out comfort food.
Try this instead: Don’t cut it out. Allow yourself to eat whatever you want, but
pay attention to every bite. Notice the flavor and texture and enjoy every bit of
it. You’ll notice you eat a lot less because you are aware when you’re satisfied and you
just naturally stop eating.
#2 NOTICE WHEN YOU’RE HUNGRY. BUT if you’re going to eat it anyway:
“I’m not hungry but I’m going to eat this anyway.”
Another corner-stone of my action guide is to constantly check in and see
whether you’re hungry or not. Sometimes you aren’t hungry, but have a
craving anyway. Decide that you’re going to eat it. Say it out loud. (Go
into the bathroom so people don’t think you’re nuts) and repeat:
“I’m not hungry but I’m going to eat this anyway.”
Then promise yourself that you’re going to enjoy every last bit. AND
promise yourself you will not feel guilty afterward. This doesn’t work if you eat it
and then beat yourself up. That will just cause more emotional cravings.
#3 PRESENTATION IS KEY.
Something that looks beautiful and has a beautiful name is going to
taste better. It is also going to make you feel more satisfied.
Think of 2 restaurants: A fast food chain, they name their signature
hamburger….a hamburger.
Now think of a really fancy restaurant.
They might also have a hamburger, with the very same ingredients
(basically) and it is called something like a “Texan’s Choice Sirloin
Beef Steak Burger”.
What makes your mouth water more? What do you think will satisfy
you more? Yep. The fancy one.
So if you are hosting the holiday meal, come up with some interesting
names for some of your dishes. (Think “Gourmet Frenched Green Bean
Casserole, and 12 Whole Grain, Cranberry and Almond Stuffing.
You guests will be wowed (they will think you put more work into it
and they’ll think it tastes better) and you will be satisfied with less, because
you have tricked your brain into thinking it’s better quality.
#4 20% RULE
This is probably the easiest to do (in theory). You can eat 20% more
or less and your stomach doesn’t notice. They have actually done
studies on this.
This is great news now that you know it. SO put 20% less on your plate
than you think you will want to eat. (You might try to hold back 1 scoop of
mashed potatoes, and 2 pieces of turkey instead of 3).
Don’t try to put 50% less. You will notice, then you’ll go back for seconds
and the point of this is wasted. 20% will do. Then eat it, savoring it.
Set the intention to eat only until you are no longer hungry and enjoy
every second!
Hopefully those tips will have you thinking in a more relaxed way. Have
a plan in mind to tackle the next couple of weeks. The holidays don’t
have to be a struggle for you!
Remember that you are fabulous exactly as you are right now. And
that you’re doing the best you can. Your perfect body is the one you’re in.
In 6 months she might weigh less, but she will still be the same person.
Relax. Use a smaller plate, a taller glass and enjoy every minute of
these wonderful days!
