Obviously, to keep the world running smoothly, and to not throw us all into complete anarchy, we have to care what other’s think to some extent. But I’m not talking about manners, social norms, or cultural rules. That stuff is fantastic, as a common courtesy for your fellow human beings.

I am talking more about the deep down, dark, scary “stuff” that you need to show in order to fully be you. You know, the light that you want to shine, but feel it’s silly, new agey, off-the-wall, and will send your close family and friends running for the hills shrieking “Witch!”

All kidding aside, you know exactly what I mean. It is important to understand that by shading that light, you are hiding a part of the real you, and you will always feel like something is missing. On the Premium Call, I’m going to teach you the exact process for letting that go.

Whether it’s the Law of Attraction, believing in angels, thinking you’re psychic, or letting people know that you believe there is a God, (which can be hard if you’re the intellectual, analytical, academic kind) you don’t have to fear what other people will say if you let that side show.

Fear is a human construct, with 2 exceptions: we are born with the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. EVERYTHING else is something we have absorbed from others or created for ourselves. And it isn’t the fear of the actual “thing” that scares us…it’s the thought behind the thing.

You’re not afraid of telling people you believe in angels and that they guide your life and keep you safe, you’re afraid of the thoughts you have created thinking you know their anticipated responses. Sounds confusing, but it isn’t really.

For example, I am terrified of snakes. To the point where even seeing them on TV makes me squirm. Sometimes I close my eyes and tell my husband to let me know when the scene is over because they just give me the heebie-jeepies. Ick. I can’t even stand thinking about them now, as I write this!

BUT, it isn’t the actual snake that I’m afraid of. If that were the case, seeing the snake on TV would not elicit any response from me. My rational brain would tell me that there is no actual snake in front of me, and that I am safe. Therefore, I’d have no fear of snakes, except when they were in front of me…which is…never!

However, my brain has a “story” about snakes that it tells itself: They’re creepy, they’re slither, they appear in unexpected places, they surprise the heck out of you when you’re walking through the grass, they will pop up and bite you.

Again, the only snakes in my part of the world are small and completely harmless unless you’re a bug of some kind. They’re good for the environment, and I haven’t come across one in years! Yet, I still have a “thing” about them.

You have the same “thing” about being you. You have a story you are telling yourself about what others think, and what it will do to you. The problem with this, is that you know that you need to be you. In order to fulfill your hopes, dreams and goals — to be happier, healthier and wealthier, you KNOW that you need to release this fear.

I can live with my fear of snakes because I rarely see them and they do not affect my ability to be happy in life. I could not live and be happy while being afraid of what people thought if they see me as new-agey and woo-woo by my fairly conservative neighbors, family members and friends...and so I let that fear go! It still pops up, (hey, I’m not perfect!) but I have found a way around it, a way that I wish to share with you.

I can live my life, my way…and be happy! And so can you.

Do positive thinkers need to grow up and get real?

I had an outstanding day yesterday. One of the many things that made me so happy:
I bought a new printer a few days ago, and had to take it back. When I took it back to exchange it for one that didn’t jam up every time I tried to print, I actually was given money back. Yep, the printer had since gone on sale and I exchanged it for a new one, plus they gave me money in return! I felt so much better after 2 days of a stupid printer that didn’t work. NOTICE, that is all about my perspective on that outcome? (I could have been angry, yelled at the customer service agent, demanded my money back, went to another store and purchased a similar printer for more money. That is probably how I would have acted a few years ago.) 

So, I had a good day. This morning I woke up to find someone had commented on one of my blog posts…YAY! I thought, I am uplifted whenever anyone takes the time to comment. But this was a TROLL. Yikes. Yuck. Ick. :-(

I sent the comment to the trash because I don’t need anyone smearing ME with THEIR “junk” but basically I was told that I was naive and “to grow up.” (The issue was a post I wrote about the power of positive, group thinking, comparing it to a Criss Angel episode I watched 6 months ago).

In the last 2 or 3 years I have discovered that (GASP) I feel better, happier, safer, freer when I believe that positive forces rule/fuel the world. I am happier when I CHOOSE to see the positive aspects of my life, and the examples in it. Do I believe everything anyone tells me? No. I am the first to check out www.Snopes.comwhenever I’m sent a crazy email. Do I believe everything that Criss Angel (a paid illusionist) does is pure and real? No, but at that point in my life I was searching for a sign, and I think I got one. Does that make me naive? Maybe in some people’s eyes.

I the end I am happy and my family is happy. What else matters? I am going to continue choosing to absorb the positive vibes of those around me, and deflect the negative ones. There is enough “junk” in this world, and I have my own to deal with, I don’t need yours! (And you don’t need mine).

  • “I just had the most horrible customer! I hate everything about this job. I hate the uniform, I hate the staff, I hate the stupid store! I wish I could quit…

Then it’s followed by a barrage of excuses:

  • I have bills to pay.
  • I’m saving for a trip to Europe.
  • It’s a really bad time to think about changing job, I’m lucky to still have a job.
  • The economy is scary right now.
  • My family depends on me.
  • I can’t afford to back to school.

Whatever your reason, this is your situation:

You really really hate your job, but can’t quit.

I completely get it, I have had some jobs that really got to me. In fact, I worked all the way through University and NEVER held a job for more than 11 months. Yep, I just couldn’t make it to that 1 year mark. Eventually I had to get out.

So right now, I see two kinds of teachings out there:

  1. The “Just Quit”group, who says that no job is worth that much anxiety or negative energy. For the most part, I would put myself in this category.
  2. The “Just Stay” group who says that it’s your job and work isn’t supposed to be fun, so get used to it and suck it up.

I prefer to take a different approach to this topic and combine the two. See, the problem is that you want to quit, but can’t. So what if (crazy idea coming on here), I can teach you some tricks to be happy, even though you hate your job?

What if we can get to the bottom of it? What if, you can be happy at work even if you really hate your job and want to quit?

So I’m changing attitudes and perspectives everywhere!

Tools & Tips to Make Friends (and make people LOVE being around you!)

So you have a toxic person in your life. You have identified them, and the reality is you cannot just leave the relationship, for whatever reason. In my Happiness & Harmony Makeover Program (the Master Life Cleanse), we spent 60 minutes talking about toxic relationships.  In preparing to teach the class, I did some thinking, reading and researching and I discovered a pile of tips for dealing with people.

Toxic people, pleasant people, people you need to be nice to, people you want to be nice to, and people that are completely neutral to you.

They might feel like common sense, but give them a try anyway and see how your next interaction goes.

  • People want to feel challenged, respected, acknowledged and appreciated. They want to feel important. This is probably the most important piece of advice you can take with you in life, when dealing with ANYONE.
  • To apply that to “toxic people”: A desire to be important drives them to do things (probably to undermine you). Make them feel special, show genuine interest or appreciation and they won’t need to do that. The trick is that it has to be genuine.
  • I try to make everyone’s day truly special, from the tired guy bagging my groceries to the experts I deal with in my business. Here is a great exercise from Dale Carnegie’s, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”

“Try leaving a friendly trail of little sparks of gratitude on your daily trips. You will be surprised at how they will set small flames of friendship that will be rose beacons on your next visit.”

So smile at people. Make the effort to get to know them. Show a real interest…this is called developing authentic rapport.

  • Top CEOs, sales people and almost everyone successful know that honest appreciation gets results, NOT criticism.
  • Repeat add this to your daily affirmations:

“I shall pass this way but once; any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now…for I shall not pass this way again.”

That should help you feel empathetic during times of extreme irritation!

  • Show genuine interest in the other person. Greet people with enthusiasm. Ask questions about themselves.
  • Believe people are inherently good and honest.
  • Let others maintain their pride. Admit your own faults first and never directly pick on theirs…this is because there is no faster way to get someone angry, irrational and defensive than to pick on them!)
  • Set a powerful example with your own behavior and watch others follow.

That’s it. Try some compassion, smile and realize that it’s not your job to modify your behavior in order to please someone else…BUT you must also not expect them to modify their behavior to please you.

Frienemies, do you have one?

According to the first definition on http://urbandictionary.com: A “toxic” person who poses as a friend but subconsciously or consciously wishes you harm.

Couldn’t have written it better myself.

A “frienemy” (friend- enemy) is a type of toxic person. And you have no room for these people in your authentic life. So this post will reveal all of the classic signs of a frienemy, so that you’re aware if you have one! I’ll cover the basics of what to do if you have a Frienemy on this weeks radio show, and I’m going into details in the Master LIFE CLEANSE starting in March.

Sign #1: You dread calling her if you have good news!
Congratulations are in order! You have a new job, just got engaged or are expecting a baby. You can’t wait to tell everyone…except one person. You dread calling her because she will find a way to “rain on your parade” (pardon the cliche) and make the happy occasion not so happy. Whether she starts in on why the timing isn’t great, or about how your life is always so great and the fact that you’re lucky while her life sucks, she leaves you feeling sorry for her. You also end up resenting her for not being happy for you.

Sign #2: After spending time with her you feel worse.
It’s time for the monthly get together with your best frienemy. You’re feeling optimistic, good things are happening for you and you can’t wait to hear all about her new boyfriend! It’s been a month and lots can happen! You’re really excited to see her. Nothing like a wonderful afternoon spent talking with a good friend! You meet her at the coffee shop, order a latte and sit in the comfy chairs to start catching up. After an hour your smile is gone, along with your energy and your bouncy outlook on life. It’s one thing to support someone in a time of need, another thing to always be supporting one person because she’s ALWAYS in need. Her boyfriend broke up with her, she hates her job and she got a parking ticket. When you finally get around to talking about you, you don’t even feel like sharing anything with her. By the end of the visit you slink back to your car feeling like you need to take a long nap…so much for good vibes today.

Sign #3: You’ve been friends for a really long time and now you can’t remember why.
I had a client send me an email. She was desperate because she had a big event coming up and one person was ruining it for her. This was a momentous occasion! An engagement only happens once (hopefully). The frienemy was so excited that she didn’t even mind that she wasn’t going to be the maid-of-honor! Except that she decided to take over the planning of the bridal shower and the girls-night-out party. The resentment and jealousy became obvious when my client learned that the “friend” had been spinning tales, getting in between people, and bad mouthing almost everyone. WOW! What to do?

“We’ve been friends forever! I can’t imagine my bridal shower without her.”

“How fun is it going to be with everyone fighting, or no one speaking?” I asked her. “Sounds like you have a frienemy…”

My client decided that this time of her life, the engagement and everything leading up to the honeymoon, was precious and that this friend needed to be dealt with. Looking back she said that things have felt off for a long time, she just didn’t want to admit it.

If you have a friend whose been in your life for a long time but you just don’t have a connection anymore, don’t feel bad. People grow and change, relationships should too.

Sign #4: You become someone you don’t like when you’re with her (complaining, whining, being negative or judgmental).
You’re in a great mood. Can’t wait to talk to your office friend Jenny about the latest gossip going around the office. You’re feeling really good, it’s been a good day. You got everything you wanted accomplished and you deserve a good 15 minute coffee break. Sitting down with her, it turns into a 20 minute complain-fest. By the end of it, you hate your job, the company and anyone that dares to look at you. What’s changed? Your energy patterns have, and you became the negative person that you usually try to avoid!

Those are just a few of the signs that you have a potential Frienemy. It’s not necessarily her fault, she might not be aware of it. And some environments bring out the worst in otherwise great people. Once you’re aware of the effect of these friends, it’s important to guard yourself.
